My name is Misba Banu. I am so happy to have this wonderful opportunity. At Bloom, the teacher explains everything so well. Earlier, I didn’t even know how to use a computer, but now I am excited to learn something new every day.

I want to achieve my dreams. My father passed away one and a half years ago, and my mother worked hard to support my education until first year pre-university college. Unfortunately, she can no longer work, and we don’t have the money for me to continue with the second year. That’s why I had to stop my studies. Now I have a chance to acquire the computer skills I need to secure a good job - because now it’s my turn to support my family.

Exciting news to share!

An idea born in 2023 led to support to make a short film in 2024; in February 2025 it will be seen for the first time by our Basis learners, many of whom were cast as extras and who learned about the art of filmmaking in the process.

The film is based on a true story from Basis’ founder Thomas Saverimuthu’s childhood.

The story, in a nutshell?

10 year old Thomas faces adversity at home and ridicule in the marketplace in 1970s India, but through sheer determination and resourcefulness, he channels his creative spirit to build a projector, showing that the power of imagination can overcome any obstacle.

Our hope is that Basis learners - and ultimately a wider audience - will be inspired to overcome any obstacles, including those imposed by poverty or society, to reach for their dreams!

It’s Christmas Eve!

Two days ago I (Christina) visited the home of Nireekshana, a recent graduate from our Freesia Bloom Digital Skills for Life Center.

She now works six days a week in marketing (putting her newfound digital literacy skills to good use!) so the only day she was free to meet was Sunday.

From her rooftop in the Chinnapa Garden slum - from which all of our Freesia Bloom learners come - I spotted a bold and bright Christmas star.

Know that as you read this it is there, foisted high, shining in its corner, as many stars are all over the world right now - at Christmas markets in wealthy cities and in majority world slums. And stars are there in our homes! My kids and I always cherished the moment we perched our lit star at the top of our living Christmas tree! Joyfully knowing that the star is symbolic of the hope we have in dark times.

Cherish this hope and keep a firm hold on it this Christmas and in the New Year.

This Giving Tuesday, be a part of creating a new Bloom Digital Skills for Life Center!

We already have 32 women coming to learn Spoken English.

Our Iris Bloom is in Goa - known for its tourism, but our learners are not tourists. Each are dealing with challenging circumstances and struggling to make ends meet.  Training at Bloom will create new possibilities for each of them!

We need to raise USD 10k to equip the centre with workstations, solar panels, UPS, and batteries.

One of our learners, Deepa Rathod, is a 17-year-old from Karnataka. She attends Bloom with her mother.   After studying up to the 8th standard, her education was interrupted by the COVID-19 lockdown. When schools reopened, she found herself unable to return, and lacked friends who could understand her struggles.

Deepa lived with her aunt during her schooling years, but after dropping out, she moved to Goa to join her family.

With one sister and two brothers, Deepa draws inspiration from her mother, who works as a housemaid and attends literacy classes to fulfill her dream of learning to read and write. Her mother’s encouragement has reignited Deepa’s desire to learn!

Though her educational journey was disrupted, Deepa is highly creative and dreams of becoming a fashion designer. While her aspirations may seem modest, they reflect her love for creating something unique and beautiful. With the right support and opportunities, Deepa hopes to turn her creativity into a career.
